Multiple locations on the globe are experimenting with programs surrounding single-use plastic bags. Add NYC to that list.
Mayor Bloomberg continues to show leadership in areas like these. With this announcement he's adding a six cent fee per bag.
This, an economic lever, is the only way that I believe people will take the time to understand the larger ramifications of single-use plastics. Of course I'd argue that six cents really isn't enough and that it doesn't truly reflect the total cost of ownership of a bag (oil exploration, shipping costs, environmental impacts, etc). Regardless, it's nice to see movement in the right direction.
